After a slow start to the season, Club América looks to be on the right track after three straight wins. While they struggled throughout the match, the team was able to pull through thanks to a goal by Alejandro Zendejas. Unfortunately, the Mexican-American was forced out of the game in the 75th minute and from the looks of it, it doesn’t look good for the player or the team. The first three games were not their best, but it looks like André Jardine is slowly getting his team back on the right path.

Before game day, América fans were given the news that two important players from the tricampeonato days left the nest. Rodrigo Aguirre and Igor Lichnovsky parted ways with the team as the club looks to rebuild and get back to their winning ways. Both Aguirre and Lichnovsky were not competing at the high level they used to. Jardine was hopeful they would regain their prior levels but that did not happen and it was no surprise they left. If the player is not producing then their time with the club is limited and that is what happened here.

Just from looking at the stats alone, it would seem that the Aguilas outscored Monterrey but that was not the case as they only won by one goal. The home side had 17 shots all game compared to the Rayados who only had four. Only five of those shots were on target for América while the visitors only registered two on target. The visitors did maintain most of the possession but possession means nothing if one can’t take advantage when they have the ball. That was the case for the Rayados whose most threatening chance was at the beginning of the first half when Sergio Canales sent a through ball to Lucas Ocampos who was unable to control the ball and lost his chance at goal. Meanwhile the Aguilas five shots on target were all dangerous and most of it thanks to ‘Rayito’ who was wrecking havoc on the left wing. He was even able to draw a foul right outside of the visitors box but his subsequent free kick went just wide of the net. The same thing happened to Alejandro Zendejas on the following play when he also drew a foul and his shot went just wide of the goal. The Aguilas were rusty in the first half and they were going to have to shake it off for the second half.

In the beginning of the first half it was Monterrey who had América pinned in their own defensive third but to start the second half it was the home side who was threatening in the box. ‘Rayito’ was even close to scoring a goal when he found himself in the box 1v1 against the goalkeeper but his shot went just wide of the top bin. Then it was Kevin Alvarez who missed his two chances at goal. The first chance was taken away before he got the opportunity to take a shot as Fidel Ambriz took the ball away at the top of the box. The next one was the biggest chance of the half as he found himself 1v1 with the goalkeeper but somehow the ball missed the net. It was a big miss and the player knew it. With the team missing so many opportunities in front of goal, Zendejas took it up on himself to fix things. In the 65th minute Jonathan dos Santos sent a ball into the box where Zendejas was there to collect it and even though he was surrounded by stripped shirts, he managed to get a shot off and the ball ended in the back of the net.

Right after the goal, Henry Martin was subbed off after he was absent in the second half. He made his return in the game against Necaxa and last night was his first time in the starting lineup since his return from injury. Unfortunately Martin has been dealing with injury for the last year so it isn’t a surprise that he is out of rhythm. Anyone familiar with the striker knows how fast he is yet he had trouble breaking free and was easily dispossessed. Martin is working hard to regain that speed and is even doing double sessions to regain his rhythm, according to TUDN analysts. It’s only a matter of time until he gets back his form and defenses will have their hands full when that happens.

Club América has had a rough start to the season. They went three games without a single goal and that was not normal for the Tricampeon. A lot of their issues were due to missing key figures because of injuries. Slowly they regained their players and it has shown. Next they will continue their journey in the Concacaf Champions Cup as they play leg two at home against Olimpia with hopes to advance to the next round of the competition. Jardine and América have a big chip on their shoulder considering this trophy is the only one that eludes Jardine but it looks like everything will be alright as they are regaining their form.
